How to Approach the Process

Now that you have all your new skills and knowledge, lets start the next step and begin applying for internships. As you start, here are some things to keep in mind.

Start Early

When you start early, you are being kind to yourself. You give yourself the time to explore, experiment, and have fun. It is an key attitude to cultivate so you can feel excited and open to the internship process. If you are thinking about applying to an internship, determining what you want to do, or where you want to work, it will be in your be interest to start your research early.

Make a commitment to look up and apply to one opening every two days. Make sure to think about summer internships in the early fall and winter. Many of the deadline are around that time. Maybe reach out to an experienced professional every month to ask questions. With enough time, you can feel calm, cool, and collected and still snag the best internship ever.

Think about what you want and why

Internships are a crucial tool, not just to develop on-the job training and skills, but also to discover knowledge about yourself and your professional wants. Before you send out application and after application, determine where you want to be and what experience you want to develop. Where do you see yourself in five years? What do you find important in an industry or a company? What sets you apart and what industry will value those skills? All are really important questions to ask.

Figuring out what and why you want it will be crucial in every step of the internship process. Once you figure out what you want out of your internship, you can craft a passionate application,  answer interview questions with personal knowledge, and discover a deep drive to motivate through the process. This reflection will give you an end goal, a higher purpose, and a better chance for that internship.

Put yourself out there

The key to this process is to keep on trying. Keep on trying over and over and over and over again. Never ever get discouraged.

It is easy to get discouraged. You will get rejected. You will be told no. It will seem like you are doing so much, but nothing is happening. Find a way to overcome that feeling. Eat chocolate, tell yourself you are awesome, listen to Beyonce songs, or go on run. Whatever you need to do, do it. Find a way to keep on going. This process is tough, it is not easy. Yet, if you keep positive, you will get through it and become a better person for it.

Be adventurous

Be open to every opportunity! While it is important to have a plan and know what you want, you can never anticipate where opportunities can take you. If you have a contact or opportunity in a different industry, you can still use that to discover extremely helpful knowledge, contacts, and experiecnces. You may even discover a profession you love that you never thought about before. Be adventurous and see where that takes you!
