About two weeks ago, alumni and students gathered at the City Tavern Club on M Street for the first annual Hoya Gateway Live, an event historically called Board of Governors/Board of Regents Student-Alumni Networking.
Greeted by a towering Hoya Gateway flag on the sidewalk, students were ushered upstairs to sign in to the event and peruse the brief biographies of alumni in attendance. Approximately 75 alumni representing nine industries were mingling downstairs in the ballroom enjoying passed hors d’oeuvres and waiting to speak with students. Alumni were encouraged to stand near their industry signs, which were spread around the ballroom to help students easily navigate the room. As over 100 students entered the event, the room was quickly buzzing with conversation and introductions.
To officially kick off the evening, participants heard remarks from GUAA Executive Director and AVP of Alumni Relations Bill Reynolds (C’79, P’10, P’13), GUAA Board of Governors Career Committee Chair Jeff Chapski (B’91), and Sarah Tripodi (N’81) and Nana Wenger (F’83, P’13. P’14), GUAA BOG Career Committee members who were instrumental in planning the event. They encouraged students to meet alumni not only in industries in which they were interested, but also to expand their horizons and speak with alumni in other industries in order to diversify their networking and learn about unique career paths.
The power of the Georgetown network was reflected in the animated and enthusiastic conversations happening throughout the room, and alumni and students received an early preview of the Hoya Gateway poster campaign that took place the following day in Red Square. In lieu of exchanging business cards, alumni encouraged students to request meetings with them via Hoya Gateway to follow up after the event. Thanks to our stellar alumni and students for a great event!
